The field of forensic archaeology has developed over recent years from being merely a branch of conventional archaeology into a well-established discipline in its own right, both within the fields of archaeology and criminal investigation. Forensic Approaches to Buried Remains proposes to move the discipline forward further still by consolidating and building on search and recovery methodologies, by defining the variety of search scenarios that practitioners may encounter and by paving the way for new and innovative research avenues. Taking a unique approach to the subject, this book places the role of the forensic archaeologist in the wider forensic environment.   This innovative new text moves the discipline forward by clearly identifying new areas of multidisciplinary research and practice and by presenting for the first time case studies relating to the variety of search and recovery scenarios that a forensic archaeologist may encounter. For example, the discovery of human remains on building sites or in the course of so-called cold case investigations often form a significant portion of the forensic archaeologists workload yet the approaches required in, or the issues concerning such scenarios have never been discussed or synthesised in forensic literature.  Operating procedures based on extensive case work will be clearly defined with the book covering the following key areas;   Search logistics, integration and specialist search scenarios Urban and rural landscape reconstruction in both short and long term cases The role, training and integration of cadaver dogs The recovery of multiple evidence types Sampling strategies, spatial relevance and dating Multiple burial scenarios   This book will be included in the new Forensic Science Society book series Essential Forensic Science and will provide students and practitioners alike with an invaluable resource outlining both the major developments in the discipline, as well as original approaches to the search for, and recovery of buried remains.
