Coastal Geomorphology, Second Edition is a comprehensive and systematic introduction to the subject and demonstrates the dynamic nature of coastal landforms, providing a background for analytical planning and management strategies in coastal areas that are subject to continuing changes. This introductory textbook has been completely revised and updated, and is accompanied by a website which provides additional illustrations, global examples, case-studies and more detailed and advanced information on topics referenced in the book, together with explanations of terminology, annotated references and research material. The aim of the book is to provide students, teachers and research workers with a coastal geomorphology information system that will enable them to follow up particular topics in more detail than is possible within the confines of a conventional textbook. The book deals with the shaping of cliffs, beaches, dunes, deltas, marshlands and coral and algal structures, and provides background on the changing levels of land and sea and the array of coastal processes that have influenced the shaping of coastal landforms and the changes now taking place on them. It analyses the causes of erosion and accretion on sectors of coastline, and examines the factors that have contributed to these, preparing the way for management strategies. Discussion on the effects of human activities on coasts, and their contribution to continuing landform evolution are also provided. The First Edition of Coastal Geomorphology was published by Wiley in August 2000 and although still selling well, a revision is needed to take into account recent developments in the field. The textbook illustrations will be similar to the 2000 version and additional colour photographs will be used extensively on the information site (accompanying CD and/or Wiley website)
