This book will provide an introduction to biostatistics for public health students, from descriptive statistics to generalized linear models. The book will be appropriate for both semesters of a two-semester introductory biostatistics series. While it is expected that the audience will have little to no prior statistical knowledge, the audience will have some understanding of research questions in public health. Statistical methods will be presented in the context of potential research questions. Students pursuing a Masters in Public Health (MPH) or a Masters in Health Administration (MHA) are required to take this course as first year master's students.
The MPH program prepares students to be effective public health professionals in one of five core areas: biostatistics, environmental & occupational health, epidemiology, health management & policy, and social & behavioral sciences. (See "Rationale for Signing" for further details.) The introductory biostatistics course is required for all five core areas and this book is designed for this course. If a student pursues the biostatistics emphasis, higher level biostatistics classes will also be required.
Students in the MHA program often are required to take the core public health courses - biostatistics, epidemiology, health behavior, environmental health. Often, the MHA program is under the Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH). The Curriculum consists of the GSPH School's public health core courses, a broad array of courses in health care system organization and management, health policy and economics, law, leadership, and professional development activities.
