The issue is imagined as an atlas, or a tour across the globe, visiting a series of sites, landscapes, architectures and infrastructures that are designed exclusively for and by machines. Overall the issue will form a portrait of this planet as it is remade by machines and industry. This is an image of a condition already in process, a vast territory that touches all of us but that is so large and pervasive that it has almost become invisible. We rarely occupy these spaces, they exist just at the edge of experience but they are crucial and fundamental to the contemporary city. They are the infrastructural and logistics landscapes that make everything possible. The intellectual ambition of the issue is to bring this ever present condition into sharp focus and force us to engage with these mechanic territories as the iconic architecture of our generation. Contributors include: Ben Bratton, Keller Easterling, Reinier de Graaf, Dan Hill, Bjarke Ingels, Rem Koolhaas and Tim Maughan
