Methods in Community Based Participatory Research examines when and how to use appropriate methods of qualitative data collection (e.g., structured and unstructured interviews, observations, group interviews) and data analysis (e.g., constant comparative method, coding schemes, theme memo) within a participatory action research framework. This book brings together many of the leading scholars who are teaching and conducting CBPR in health and related fields to provide readers with strategies and lessons learned for how to apply different methods using a partnership approach. Some of the methods included are: survey questionnaire, in-depth interview, focus group interview, ethnography, exposure assessment, and Geographic Information System mapping. In addition to specific research methods, this book will examine methods that are critical to the process of conducting CBPR, such as, selecting research partners, group process and facilitation, developing conceptual models, and data feedback and interpretation. Each chapter will describe the application of the method using a CBPR approach, providing a case study of how the method has been applied. Importantly, rather than being an introductory book on how to conduct different research methods, for which there are already many excellent volumes, this book will focus on how to use different methods in a participatory way. Another key feature of this book is the inclusion in the appendices of examples of concrete tools and measurement instruments that may be adapted by others involved in CBPR efforts (e.g., in-depth interview protocol, partnership evaluation questionnaire).
