The clinical examination of common surgical conditions has been paramount in accurate diagnosis and management. This book provides a framework for candidates preparing for the short case clinical component of the surgical examination. It can be used as a companion to other surgical textbooks and a guide for medical students and surgical residents in preparation for clinical work.It includes detailed description of clinical examination steps and techniques, proper presentation of cases, as well as tips and lessons gained from past surgical examinations. The questions and answers in this book are designed according to the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) format. They are divided into simple and advanced questions according to difficulty intended at the undergraduate, post-graduate and exit level.The book will be helpful in developing a structure to prepare for the surgical clinical examinations, viva and the OSCE. The illustrations and algorithms included will help the reader grasp concepts of the surgical topic easily and aid the candidate in passing the surgical examinations with confidence.
Dr Marc Ong Weijie obtained his medical degree from National University of Singapore in 2010, received his postgraduate Masters of Medicine (Surgery) degree in 2015, exited as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in 2018 and was accorded Specialist accreditation in General Surgery by the Ministry of Health, Singapore in the same year. He is currently a consultant surgeon in Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Singapore, with sub-specialty interests in breast surgery, hernia surgery and trauma surgery. As an appointed clinical senior lecturer at Lee Kong Chian and Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, he has a great passion for teaching and is actively involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate education. He has received numerous teaching awards for his contributions to education including the Dean's Honour Roll for Teaching Excellence (National University of Singapore) in 2020 and the Top 10 Teacher Award for Surgical Division (National Health Group). Being taught by many great teachers and mentors that preceded him, he firmly believes in paying it forward to the next generation of surgeons and students alike.Dr Tay Wee Ming graduated from Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine in 2008. He joined the National Healthcare Group (NHG) General Surgery Residency Program and graduated in 2017. He now serves his time as a trauma and acute care surgery consultant in Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Wee Ming's passion is in teaching. He is a clinical lecturer for the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. He runs multiple courses to train young doctors and residents in open, laparoscopic and trauma surgical skills. In 2015 to 2017, he represented Tan Tock Seng Hospital to set up the Skills in Trauma and Resuscitation (STAR) course in Cambodia to share on our experience in managing trauma patients. He was an invited as a speaker to the World Trauma Congress in 2018 to present on trauma and acute care surgery training. In pursuit of better patient care, Wee Ming is active in quality improvement project and his participation has won him the Outstanding Award in 2016. Wee Ming hopes he can use his humour to impart his skills and knowledge through this book in an enjoyable way.Prof Low Cheng Hock obtained his MBBS in 1968 and subsequently Masters of Medicine (Surgery), FRACS, FRCS and FAMS. He is currently Emeritus Consultant in the Department of General Surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). He is a clinical professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (National University of Singapore) as well as the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore). He was formally the Head of Department (TTSH General Surgery), Chairman for the Division of Surgery and subsequently the Chairman Medical Board of TTSH. He has also served as the President of the Singapore Medical Association and Master of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. He is keenly active in voluntary service and previously served as a Justice of Peace. His main interest and passion is in surgical education. For his public services, he has been awarded the Public Administration Medal (Gold and Silver), along with the Public Service Medal (PBM) and Public Service Star (BBM) awards as part of the National Day Awards.
