It is important for both students and practitioners in the Earth, Environmental and Archaeological Sciences to have an understanding of the basics of dating, to the range of techniques available and the strengths and limitations of each of the principal methods. There is a gap in the market for an introductory textbook aimed at both student and practitioners which introduces each of the methods in a clear and straightforward manner and with the minimum of technical detail. The first chapter will introduce the concept of time in Quaternary Science and related fields and the history of dating from lithostratigraphy and biostratigraphy to the development and application of radiometric methods. Subsequent chapters will cover the different methods in dating: radiometric dating, incremental dating, relative dating and age equivalence.
