There is an increasing tendency to integrate optical communication with wireless communication to satisfy continuously emerging (new) data communication demands. Thus, optical-wireless-integrated access networks and transmission systems, as well as LED-based visible light communication are attracting ever increasing research interest. Digital signal processing (DSP) is one new technology for optical transmission. As such this book is designed to pave the way to the better understanding of the deployment of DSP in optical fiber communication systems.Digital Signal Processing for High-Speed Optical Communication covers a wide area of DSP topics in optical communications, and describes state-of-the-art digital signal processing techniques for high-speed optical communication. In this book, numerous advanced digital signal processing techniques aiming at the promotion of the capacity increase and performance improvement of optical or optical-wireless communication systems and networks are presented and explained. Coverage includes new technologies, optical filter with MLSE, and new pre-coding and pre-equalization applicable to single-carrier and multi-carrier, direct-detection and coherent-detection optical commutation systems and networks.
Jianjun Yu is a Chair Professor for at Fudan University, and the director of US optics labs for ZTE Tx Inc. since 2010. Prior to that Dr. Yu was a senior technical staff member and project leader at the NEC Laboratory America. He has also worked on the technical staff at Bell labs, Lucent Technologies and Agere Systems, and has served on the research faculty at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Denmark Technical University. He holds a PhD and a MD in telecommunications from the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications.Jianjun is an Optical Society of America (OSA) Fellow and a senior Member of IEEE, IEEE Photonics Society, and serves as Associate Editor of IEEE Photonics Journal, IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology, OSA/IEEE Journal of Optical Communication and Networking, and OSA Journal of Optical Communication. He served as the Editor-in-Chief for Recent Patents on Engineering from 2008 to 2016. Dr Yu is an expert in high-speed optical communication systems and networks. He has authored/co-authored 600 peer-reviewed technical journal and international conference papers as well as 60 US patents.Xinying Li is a Postdoctoral Fellow specialising in fiber-wireless integration systems and networks. She is currently at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, working for the National Science Foundation, USA, on fiber wireless integration and networking for next generation heterogeneous mobile data communications. She holds a PhD and a BSc in Communication Science and Engineering, from Fudan University, China. Previously, she worked for the International Program of Shanghai Science and Technology Association, China, from 2012 to 2014. Xinying is a Member of IEEE, IEEE Photonics Society, and Optical Society of America (OSA), Associate Editor of Recent Patents on Engineering and Digital Communications and Networks, and an active reviewer of the Journal of Lightwave Technology, Photonics Journal, Journal of Optical Communications and Networking, Optics Letters, and Optics Express. She has also authored/co-authored 173 peer-reviewed technical journal and international conference papers as well as 4 US patents.Junwen Zhang received his PhD degree in optical communication and signal processing from Fudan University, Shanghai, China in 2014. During 2012 and 2014, he was a visiting student in Georgia Institute of Technology, and worked at the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Center on Optical Wireless Applications (COWA), where he did research on 100G/400G/1T high speed transmission systems and digital signal processing. In 2015, he joined Georgia Tech as a Post-doc Research Fellow and served as a 5G Research Lab manager in the NSF-sponsored Research Center of Fiber-wireless Integration and Networking (FiWIN), doing research on high-speed optical-wireless integration Access Network, and novel Fronthaul and Backhaul networking technologies for next generation mobile networks. Dr Zhang joined ZTE Tx Inc. in 2016 as a Senior Research Engineer, working on high-speed optical access networks for fixed (NG-PON) and mobile services. His research interests cover many aspects of fiber and wireless communication systems and networks, including high-speed transmission, advanced modulation formats, digital signal processing, radio-over-fiber, fiber-wireless integration, mobile fronthaul/backhaul, etc. Dr Zhang has published more than 160 peer-reviewed papers in IEEE/OSA/SPIE journals and conferences, and has achieved several record-breaking transmission results in 400G optical transport systems. He has also co-authored 8 US patent applications (3 granted, 5 pending). Given his outstanding work, he received the Marconi Society Paul Baran Young Scholar Award in 2016. He was also the recipient of IEEE Photonics Society Graduate Student Fellowship in 2013, the Wang Daheng Optics Award in 2013, and the China Scholarship Council Fellowship in 2012.
