The issue argues that architects have a vital role to play in these transitions, and, as such, features both existing and in progress projects, work, and ideas, as well as acting as a platform for new perspectives and voices. Moreover, the issue's argument for an area conventionally seen as beyond the domain of architecture, even in expanded fields of 'spatial practice', as in fact integral to the discipline's future, will prompt and direct much needed debate, and in turn act as a vital spur to future practice and research. The issue aims to capture something of this quality in the range of contributors and contribution it features. These include architects already working in this space or on its margins; critics and curators working from the perspective of architecture whose work is pushing the discipline into new areas, as well as others working from the perspective of technology who are stepping into territory usually deemed to be architectural. And then there are other practitioners whose work explores different ways the architectural and digital worlds are colliding.
